Insurance Tips for RV Renters

  • Before renting, ask your insurance agent whether your personal auto policy covers rental vehicles.
  • Ask your credit card company what coverage it provides (must be the card you use to pay for the rental)
  • If your personal auto policy doesn't provide rental coverage, ask the cost of adding a rental insurance rider
  • If you don't own a car, consider buying a non-owner auto insurance policy that provides benefits in additional rental coverage
  • If you are unclear about rental insurance options or are concerned that a rental company is giving you bad information, check with your state insurance department
  • NYS Insurance Departments number is - 1-800-342-3736
  • www.ins.state.ny.us
  • Additional liability coverage can be obtained through our insurance company, MBA Insurance (ask us for the info)

RV SAFETY

The following information is provided to ensure you are aware of basic requirements for the safe operation of all recreational vehicles.

  • Make sure each passenger wears a seat belt!!!
  • Each child has an appropriate safety seat and it is properly installed!!!
  • Follow all traffic and safety laws.
  • Obey all posted speed limits and warning signs.
  • Slow down in adverse weather conditions.  REMEMBER - bridges and overpass's freeze before the road will, even when salted.
  • Never drive if taking medications that cause drowsiness, follow medication guidelines.
  • Never drive if you have been drinking alcohol.
  • Never drive if you have used any drugs legal or illegal, perscription or non-perscription.
  • Be well rested and alert each time you get behind the wheel of any vehicle!
  • Avoid prolonged hours of driving.  Even if you need to wake someone up or pull over and rest, you and your family/friends need to arrive alive, not just arrive!!!
  • Avoid distractions while driving.  This includes eating, drinking, cell phone use, operating the radio, being distracted by other vehicles or other passangers or sights along the road..
  • Never leave children unattended in your vehicle.
  • Always remove the keys from the ignition and take them with you when stopping, even for just a minute.

 CHOOSE YOUR RV CAREFULLY

  1. Cost per week or day - weekly or daily rates very but compare with mileage charge.
  2. Free miles -  How many are included in your weekly rental
  3. Cost for additional miles -
  4. Insurance - in NYS the minimum coverage is 25/50/25.  If you do not purchase extra coverage you are covered only by the bare minimum.  If you are driving a $100,000 vehicle you need more coverage.  You also need at least $1 million in liability coverage to protect yourself and your family.
  5. # of beds or # of adults vehicle sleeps - very important when choosing your vehicle size
  6. # of seatbelts- important for how many people can ride safely in the motorhome
  7. Service contract or roadside assistance -  flat tires do happen, is it covered and how do you get it fixed in the middle of nowhere.
  8. Generator -  free usage or hourly cost
